Just started to play with it… VERY SLICK… and it just seems to work.. not splashy…. just works… would be nice to integrate a bit better with my contacts in gmail… but that’s trivial.. now to get it hooked up to Sunbird…

I use Roboform…  unlike RoboCop…  Roboform fills out passwords and info… I only have to remember 1 passphrase to sign in and it works with many browsers…

but…

Mozilla just released a NEW update to Firefox… 1.5.0.1 -> 1.5.0.2  and now Roboform doesn’t work… :( so I’m stuck… i use REALLY COMPLEX passwords… Roboform’s reply?  1 or 2 days…

So I have to WAIT or downgrade… the last time I had this problem I had beta version of Firefox which they said was not supported as it was beta… which I’m ok with but man.. a TINY number upgrade and it’s 1 or 2 DAYS of waiting?  I could understand if it was a guy in a shack somewhere but these people have FULL page ads in magazines… they have to have SOME kind of staff to just go ‘oh there’s a new version coming out we better prepare’

Well I’m being  a little harsh.  But I guess I’m like a crack addict but with roboform… I really hate to type in my login and roboform is head and shoulders OVER anything else I’ve found…

Google is now going after geocites and the like… an WYSIWYG editor using Ajax… Pretty spiffy… Yeah get ready INTERNET for MORE CRAPPY WEBSITES…  http://pages.google.com/

Speaking of which… Why is it that people on MySpace have to have pages that not only have BAD CSS… BAD Colors… but add sound and VIDEO… to them… Web design is like nuclear physics… you can do A LOT and the results can be devastating!

HTML CSS Javascript are like a hammer… you can build a house… or use it to make a statue…. or just SMASH SOMEONES SKULL IN….

Oh for the days of black times roman, blue links and NO ANIMATED GRAPHICS

It just makes my job harder… because clients feel that because they can make a webpage in 3 seconds.  (The quality of which my 5yo can match) that building them a REAL website should be just as fast… its like the patient telling the surgeon gee could you hurry up I’ve got more important things to do…

Yes this is a rant.. but I get tired of people thinking my job is easy because they threw up (or vomited up) a few pages.  Plus they never get to see the elegance of a great site using Smarty or the way things can fall together when the backend design is so modular that additional features are a snap. Even my cow orkers don’t understand that stuff… oh well I guess being this smart has it’s drawbacks

Faster fox is GREAT tweak up Firefox to run faster… BUT one of the features just proactively downloads links of the site ahead of your click… this lets them load SUPER FAST but can also slow down others on your network and KILLS website bandwidth… So here is a way to slow down the sucking of your bandwidth…

I LIKE no love this thing… Just a word of warning I’m a geek/nerd/dork.  I’m NOT a newbie to computers or networking… I’m a skilled linux user and an advaced MS user..  So I kinda know  my stuff…

For those who love editing line by line of configuration files… yippy for  you… for me I just don’t have the time… NOT AT ALL… Privoxy is GREAT I got things working RIGHT AWAY.. no mysterious tracking it in the log files and munging with filter files..  It has a point and click interface… If I want to see what happens to a url I can see what rules are applied… YEAH…
No guessing or working with  Webmin to get it running… It JUST WORKS…. Now am I then end all and be all? Nope!  I do like  the ad zapper graphics… the checkerboard doesn’t do it for me…

So  after weeks over the past 2 years of fightinig with SquidGuard and AdZapper.. I’m now working with Privoxy and happy as a pig in mud…

I recently added Privoxy to my network.  It’s MUCH easier to manage than Squid/SquidGuard or AdZapper. Yes I get off on point and click.   HOWEVER Cpanel STOPPED working altogether.  I’d goto the admin screen and it would be BLANK.  So in reading through the forums.  Well privoxy doesn’t have forums they do all their discussion in bug tracking.  I found 2 things.  First Cpanel needed
+downgrade-http-version
But I STILL got a blank screen.
So I then added
+limit-connect{443,2087,2083}
The last 2 ports are the SSL connections to cpanel.  I use them just to make people feel a little safer.

BTW I still have squid running so my network has the following
Privoxy->Squid/Adzapper->Internet
OR for the kids
Dansguardian->Squid/AdZapper->Internet
I MAY be moving DansGuardian before Privoxy.

The GREAT thing about this is I can attach at any point in the chain and get various features.
Internet for RAW UNADULTERATED FUN
Squid/AdZapper for less adds and a cache
FINALLY Privoxy for EVEN LESS Ads and the caching of squid.

And for those who ask.  Yes it’s faster…

The Internet, the future is filtered!

Ok I’ve been running IE7 for a bit now… not just starting it up and going ooo it runs but having it as my default browser.  Yes DEFAULT.  Some really good things happened and some not so good and some I said some words my kids didn’t need to hear.  I’ll try not to slam IE or Firefox and rather than whine try and put a solution.  I do know that IE7 is BETA….

  • Fast Fast Fast.. Yes it’s fast… MUCH BETTER THAN FIREFOX with less memory… And YES I’ve tried the compiles of Firefox for my system.  DON’T START ABOUT THE “Well some of the stuff IE uses is hidden within the system memory” Because I don’t think 200MB is hidden when the system is using 400MB of ram and Firefox is using 200MB.  I do feel that because the Firefox codebase is multiplatform, specific windows api calls that would enable a LOT less memory and processor usage are unable to be used.  It’s kinda like legos. You have some knock offs which have a lot of the standard pieces.  But to build a Millenium Falcon you can try and piece it together with stadard pieces or get some of the special Lego brand pieces. The only resolution is to fork the Firefox code and put in these types of optimizations but this would increase the update lifecycle and cause a NIGHTMARE with extension builders.  Not that it cannot be done just really really tough to coordinate.
  • Tabs WHO DOESN’T LIKE EM? They even close with a middle click!  But there are some issues with how IE uses them you’ll see later on…
  • Popups Pretty much ok on the popup blocker.
  • ActiveX Security I get the warnings.  VERY NICE! This resolves almost all of the “Well it uses ActiveX So it’s BAD”.  At this point it’s USER EDUCATION.  I’ve been on a LOT of websites.  MOST do not install ActiveX CRAP.  The ones that do are USUALLY in 2 categorys.  Porn or Hacking.  I’m not going to touch on the porn but if you’re not an intermediate or advanced computer user DON’T GO TO THESE SITES!  To go and install these things is to each chewing gum from the bottom of a table in a seedy bar.
  • Roboform - Yeah it works!
  • Definatly Doable - I can use it as my browser on a daily basis.   I would be BLOWN AWAY if I never had used Firefox.  But it’s a sizeable feature upgrade (albiet 2 years late) to IE.

Ok now for the bad stuff

  • Rendering - Popfile looks like CRAP in this browser.  Worked FINE in IE6, IE 5, Opera, Netscape, Firefox.  But now there are things WRONG.  A few other sites just DON’T LOOK RIGHT
  • ACID2 - Did MS people say WE DON’T NEED NO STANDARDS?  Granted it renders most sights fine but have to seen this?  Firefox at least gets a circle somewhat together.  This looks like the smilie face was run over by a steam roller.
  • Tabs - give them a sticker for effort.  Yes the work.  Not enough features.  In Firefox I can have only 1 browser and if a link is opened from another program it sucks it in. IE opens a NEW browser.  No this is NOT popups this is opening from Google Desktop Sidebar, Email, Start menu.  There’s a total of  5 checkboxes and 3 radio buttons for configuration.  With Firefox I have Tabbrowser Extensions.  which has like 200 options.  The open new tab button is blank on my  system except when moused over… This is something that they can resolve with a few patches.  NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX….
  • Missing Extensions - This is just whiny.   But I LOVE the Performancing Blogging Extension and a bunch of other development extensions.

Ok so I’ve been using it for about a week now… and I like no LOVE the speed.  Browser windows POP.  It reminds me of the trick of changing the menu display speed for Windows.  It just feels FASTER.  Less memory all this makes it GREAT tabs are a step in the right direction.  Will I throw out my Firefox HELL NO!  But I’m curious to see how MS goes with this.
